Teaching Children to Save Money Early

Needless to say, schools teach students how to read, write, and count. At an early age, children are required to go to school just to learn the basic things that they need when they grow up. Too bad none of these early subjects has given them an idea about personal finance. In today's modern society, kids may learn the basics of money and making change in grammar school. However, they are not taught how to manage money unless they choose finance as a career path.

This is why parents need to back them up so that they will be prepared to face the fiscal challenges in life. Always remember that teaching them about money will help them develop strong saving habits, learn to make smart buys, understand the true meaning of investment, and most of all learn why they cannot get everything they want all at once. Likewise, this initiative will actually help them avoid accumulating debt and help them plan for financial security in the long run.

As a parent, you can encourage simple savings lesson that involves piggy banks, shoebox or even an empty peanut butter jar. Part of this is to stimulate them to save a portion of their allowance for a special goal. One way of making it happen is to reward them of a small additional amount once they initiate the savings. You can calculate the total amount and add extra savings as interest at the end of each month. If possible, consider plotting a visual chart of their savings to motivate the learning process further. Simply take note that children have limited capacity to learn, so make sure that you keep this as simple as possible.
